ThoughtWorks University

ThoughtWorks University is our twice-yearly training program for graduate new hires. The 6-week long course is a learning opportunity on both sides: for the graduates to learn about ThoughtWorks practices and for us to learn how to mentor those with less experience but equal aptitude. The mentoring relationship is something that many ThoughtWorkers take a great deal of pride in doing and all of the trainers at the University are ThoughtWorkers.

Why India?

ThoughtWorks India has recruited and trained graduates since its inception, so it seemed fitting for us to conduct ThoughtWorks University here. Projects are as far as possible 'pure Agile' and set a good example for the practices and values we use on our projects world-wide. In addition, most of the projects in Bangalore use Distributed development so you'll develop first-hand knowledge of how these projects work.

Many ThoughtWorkers have worked in countries other than their own. As we look ahead, it is evident that ThoughtWorks will continue to have high cross-cultural team collaboration. Our training centre allows new ThoughtWorkers to gain exposure to a diverse team environment, and facilitate communication across various cultures and backgrounds.

'ThoughtWorks University is an unrivaled experience. I learned loads of new information, was immersed in another culture, met people from all over the world, all while attempting to explore India. It's an opportunity not to be missed.'

Why have a University?

ThoughtWorks is a place where practices and values quickly spread across the entire company. We value experience and challenges, because they provide us with detailed feedback, and we enjoy sharing what we learn with other ThoughtWorkers. Sharing and growing from these experiences was easy when ThoughtWorks was small, but as we've grown into a global organisation spread across four continents, collaboration and learning is a little more complex now.

Put simply, ThoughtWorks University was developed to help new joiners fail fast and make mistakes quickly. By engaging you in learning experiences drawn from across the company, you'll discover the values, principles, and practices that have made ThoughtWorks successful.

Graduates and those switching careers have long been a part of ThoughtWorks' culture. They're a source of vibrant energy and offer fresh perspectives on existing problems. Some of our first college recruiting drives started in 1997 and 1998, and we've seen leaders arise from each class ever since.

How will I learn?

ThoughtWorks University is a six-week long, consultant training program, comprised of facilitated class-room sessions and individual performance coaching and review. Our aim is to provide you with an opportunity to explore the issues faced everyday on our projects and within the ThoughtWorks community. Throughout, you'll discover the confidence to be professional consultants and take an active role in shaping the ThoughtWorks culture.

We believe you learn best by doing, so sessions are very interactive. The trainers do not lecture you. Instead, we'll guide you through a number of scenarios that we've faced throughout our careers. These scenarios are presented through games, role-playing activities, and case studies. Each scenario is then followed by guided discussion to elaborate on what you'll need to solve the problem.

We also know that everyone has their own learning path. That's why the trainers are also your coaches during your time at ThoughtWorks University. You'll meet with your coach to set goals for the term and discuss what you can do in specific circumstances to accelerate your learning. You'll have opportunities to chat with your coach each week, ask for feedback on your performance, and set personal goals for the following week.
