Internal Dynamics: Building Better Relationships

Sometimes even before we start an engagement with a client it can be clear that the internal dynamics (the relationship between IT and the business) are less than perfect.

There may be mistrust, there may have been differences in opinion. There are, no doubt, requirements that change at inopportune moments. There were almost certainly huge piles of paperwork; documentation referred to only when it's time to allocate blame.

We need to work with both the business and IT to ensure we deliver a solution that is the right one. We want to do it quickly and in a way that will deliver business value. Which means we need to talk.

One of the keys to successful delivery is getting IT and the business talking effectively. We use lightweight, collaborative requirements gathering techniques and deliver working software from a very early stage. As the business sees their requirements quickly turning into working software, trust is built and the business begins to engage with the project more. Our project management techniques give the business the ability to change their minds and steer the project to accommodate their changing environment. Once the business is back in the driving seat of a project that delivers the software it needs, everyone wants to be involved.
